Autoclave in a layman’s language is pressure chamber which is usually made up of stainless steel. Inside the chamber, both pressure and temperature are elevated through heating under a controlled environment for carrying out various medical and industrial application in which the most important being the process of sterilization. There are two types of autoclaves manufactured- vertical and horizontal. In Vertical Autoclave the matter to be autoclaved (or) sterilized are loaded from the top, thus are also sometimes known as Top loading Autoclave whereas in Horizontal Autoclave the matter is kept in a tray which is kept horizontally.
